THE BLUE TRAIN (SOUTH AFRICA)
The famous Blue Train has run between Cape Town and Pretoria, South Africa, since 1939. The train derives its name from its blue-painted locomotive and cars. It is considered one of the world's most luxurious trains. At present, the Blue Train runs several times a month, covering the distance of 1,600 km in 27 hours, including a sightseeing stop. Its average operating speed is 90 kmh. The Blue Train is operated by Luxrail, a division of Transnet Freight Rail, South Africa's national railway operator. The service is promoted as a "magnificent five-star hotel on wheels" and it is often noted that kings and presidents have travelled on it.
There are actually two Blue Train sets - simply referred to as Train Set 1 and Train Set 2. A 14-car Train Set 1 can accommodate a maximum of 54 passengers and is available for use during charters. The Train Set 2 is a regular service train running weekly. It includes 19 cars and accommodates a maximum of 82 guests. Each of the two trains consists of a Baggage Van, Power Car, Personnel Car, Club and Lounge Cars (smoker and non-smoker), Kitchen Car, Dining Car as well as De Luxe and Luxury Suite carriages.
There is also a special Conference Car on the Train Set 2. If not booked for use during a trip, the Conference Car is converted into an Observation Car for passengers' viewing pleasure. This car is the ideal setting for family get-togethers, meetings, seminars or special occasions.
In the De Luxe and Luxury carriages, there are 4 and 3 comfortable suites respectively. Each suite has either two beds or one double bed, a bathroom or a shower, as well as air-conditioning, under-floor heating, audio CD and DVD systems, large-screen plasma televisions, interurban phones, free WiFi.
Meals are served in the 42-seat dining car and include delicious African and continental cuisine. All meals are freshly prepared on board the train by Executive Chefs. Breakfast can be served either in the suite or in the dining car. Dinner is a formal affair and there is a dress code: no trainers or jeans. Men are requested to wear a jacket and tie and ladies are requested to dress in elegant evening wear. Each meal is accompanied by a selection of equally tasteful background music, ranging from smooth jazz to light classics.
The Blue Train's Lounge and Club Cars are ideal for an apéritif, an interlude between meals or an after-dinner conversation. The Club Car is the only area on the train where smoking is permitted. Entertainment includes cards, chess, backgammon, or a volume from the library. In the Lounge Car, high tea is served each afternoon. In 1997, the Blue Train sets were refurbished. Some of the innovations include a sophisticated air suspension system, which ensures a smooth ride of rolling stock. In addition to it, the locomotives were fitted with a specially designed independent braking system in the interests of safety.
