ВАРИАНТ № 19
ЗАДАНИЕ № 1:
a) Прочитайте и письменно переведите текст:
Former Taimyr Autonomous Area occupies 862 100 km2. The region also includes the islands between the Yenisei and Khatanga gulfs, the northern parts of Central Siberian Plateau and the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. The capital of the area is Dudinka, which is also the northernmost major seaport in Russia and the largest port in Siberia. Dudinka site was established in 1667 by Ivan Sorokin as a post for gathering tribute, paid in furs, from local tribes in the Taimyr region. In 18th century, the few log huts at Dudinka provided refuge for the explorers who took part in the Great Northern Expedition of 1733-1743, including Semyon Chelyuskin, Fyodor Minin and Khariton Laptev. In 1843, the notable zoologist Alexandr Middendorf reached Dudinka during his expedition through the Taimyr Peninsula. In 1875-1876, the Swedish-Finnish geographer Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld used Dudinka as a temporary base during his exploration of the Taimyr. Other prominent explorers such as Fyodor Shmidt, Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen and Nikolai Urvantsev also stopped there. However, vast distances and a severe climate prevented significant growth of the population in the area. At the beginning of 20th century, Dudinka had some around 70 inhabitants. There were only primitive log huts with a small wooden church in the settlement. In 1930, the administrative center of Taimyr Dolgan-Nenets National Region was designed. In the latter half of the 1930s Dudinka became a critical point in the accelerated development of Norilsk industrial complex, launched in 1935 by the Soviet Council of Commissars at one of the world’s richest sources of nickel and copper. That is why the polar explorer Otto Shmidt visited the settlement and recommended to expend it into a town. By the end of 1937, Dudinka port facilities and small railroad to Norilsk were completed. In addition to transporting massive industrial equipment, for two decades Dudinka port served as the grim gateway for thousands of prisoners headed to Norilsks penal camps each year. In 1951, Dudinka was granted a formal status of a town. After closure of Norillag in 1956, Dudinka served as the main transportation mean of everything needed for the expending city of Norilsk and its plants. Nowadays, imports and exports, including processed nickel and copper, continue to pass through the Dudinka port.
