7. Work in pairs. Act out the conversation between Robin Hood and the trader.

Work in pairs. Act out the conversation between Robin Hood and the Abbot.
Imagine that you are Robin Hood. Note down the words you would tell the Abbot. Would you make him pay for the meal if you were not sure that the Abbot lied?

О горе стране, о горе! Нет римлян с нами более;

Cultural Awareness
(Module 1)
1a What is culture?
Fill in the gaps with the words.
6. Translate into Russian paying attention to what culture is.
7. Read about the basic characteristics of culture and its fundamental elements.
Culture is shared, by which we mean that every culture is shared by a group of people. Depending on the region they live in, the climatic conditions they thrive in and their historical heritage, they form a set of values and beliefs. This set of their principles of life shapes their culture. No culture belongs to an individual. It is rather shared among many people of a certain part of the world. It belongs to a single community and not to any single human being.
Culture is learned. The members of a culture share certain ideals, which shape their lives. Generations learn to follow these ideals and principles. Culture propagates through generations, which adopt their old customs and traditions as a part of their culture. The ideals they base their lives on is a part of their culture. Cultural values are imparted from one generation to another, thus resulting in a continual of traditions that are a part of culture. The language, the literature and the art forms pass across generations. Culture is learned, understood and adopted by the younger generations of society. No individual is born with a sense of his/her culture. He/she has to learn it.
What are the elements of culture? The language, other forms of expression as also the thoughts and emotions of the people, their social and cultural norms, their principles and beliefs are the basic elements of culture. For an effective transfer of culture from one generation to another, it has to be translated in terms of symbols, which represent the cultural values of a community. Language, art and religion form the system of symbols that render a deep meaning to culture.
Despite the efforts of the older generations to transfer their cultural values to the forthcoming generations, many tend to remain unaware of their culture. People are often found to have an incomplete knowledge of their culture. People seldom know their culture completely.
( Find the English equivalents for the following phrases.
8. Read about 2 business incidents where culture has been a problem.
I was in Germany on business, and after dinner one evening I wandered into an art gallery and spotted a very interesting painting. I asked the woman working there how much the piece cost, and she gave me a price. I looked at a few more works and asked her for several more prices, which she gave me. After strolling around the gallery, I went back to her and told her I would take the first painting I had inquired about. She said, ‘Oh, that one is sold.’ Surprised, I pointed to my second choice, then my third choice, and she responded that they too were sold. Confused, I finally asked ‘Which paintings are not sold?’ and she replied, ‘Oh, just that one there.’ I asked her why she didn’t tell me that at the beginning. She looked surprised and said, ‘Well, you didn’t ask.’ (New Jersey; Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti, Business-author-expert)

I have found that different cultures have different rules toward personal space. In Russia we tend to feel comfortable talking about a handshake distance away from each other. In Japan the distance is greater: about a bow distance away. But when I work with Latin Americans the distance is much closer. That was the fact I didn’t know about. So when a manager from Latin America moved closer to me, I tried to back away at once. I understood that it made the partner confused, though. Later my colleague told me that the host might view my behaviour as cold and impersonal. You see how essential it is to be aware of these social differences so that you don’t move in on a person, forcing them to back away, or, alternatively, if someone moves closer to you, you don’t back away, giving them a feeling of distance. (Olga Belova, Chief Financial Officer)

Pretty Hamlets & Villages”.
BRITAIN
The official magazine
January-February 2012
Pretty Hamlets & Villages
Ancient or haunted, thatched or timbered, practical or picturesque – Britain’s villages are a pleasure to explore and allow us to glimpse the country’s past.
If Britain's cities are the bones of the country, then its villages are its veins. Dotted across the countryside, widely different in style, many villages remain as beautiful today as they were centuries ago. Often lined with pretty thatched cottages or creamy stone houses, village halls, post offices and sweetshops, our villages are as pretty- as the postcards they're often depicted on.
The challenge comes when trying to decide which village to visit first and in which part of the country you should begin your journey. Many of Scotland's villages can claim to be the oldest and longest inhabited in the British Isles. Dreghorn in North Ayrshire is believed to be the very oldest, following the discovery of an ancient settlement and the remnants of a 5,500-year-old well, one of only five to be found in Scotland, dating back to around 3500BC. Although other Neolithic villages have been abandoned in Scotland - Skara Brae being the most famous - Dreghorn is thought to be the only village in Britain that has been a continual unbroken residence.

Let’s revise some information. I’ve made a presentation for you. Now we will look at photos and I’ll ask you some questions:
1. What is the difference between the words “hamlet” and “village”?
- hamlet n - group of houses in the country; smaller than a village, esp. one without a church.

Task 2
Match the examples of the present continuous with the right description:
An action happening exactly now:
John! Can you answer the phone, please? I’m washing my hair.
I’m waiting for you at the station. I’m wearing a dark suit and a red tie.
An action happening around now:
I’m sorry. I’m so tired. We’re having a lot of problems at work.
I’m reading an excellent book at the moment. It’s about a mad Danish king.
An action which happens again and again:
You’re always complaining about your flat. Why don’t you move to a new one?
I’m not surprised Terri’s so stressed. She’s always drinking coffee.
Task 3
Finish the sentences from the last exercise by using the present continuous. Use 'always' if you need it.
- I’m not surprised Terri’s so stressed. She’s always drinking coffee.
I’m reading an excellent book at the moment. It’s about a mad Danish king.
I’m waiting for you at the station. I’m wearing a dark suit and a red tie.
I’m sorry. I’m so tired. We’re having a lot of problems at work.
John! Can you answer the phone, please? I’m washing my hair.
You’re always complaining about your flat. Why don’t you move to a new one?
And now let’s enlarge our vocabulary.
