На протяжении более 50 лет США четко придерживались негативных политических сценариях кубинского кризиса. Положение переходило из крайности в крайность: разрыв дипломатических отношений, введение торгового эмбарго, внесение Кубы в список стран спонсирующих терроризм, но с приходом к власти Б. Обамы США осознает неэффективность своих действий и меняет внешнеполитический курс на нормализацию отношений. На своем посту Б. Обама достигает хоть и не полного, но частичного сближения противоборствующих стран, что являлось бесспорным успехом

С приходом к власти Д. Трампа ситуация преставидяется неоднозначной для кубинского правительства. С одной стороны, курс на сближение стран поддерживает большинство населения Соединенных Штатив Америки, но с другой стороны, Трамп явно не собирается идти на компромисс с Раулем Кастро и требует полного выполнения своих требований. У кубинцев тоже есть свои условия для сближения. Некоторые страны Латинской Америки, поддерживающие или симпатизирующие Кубе, автоматически попадают под немилость США, что естественным образом наращивает антагонизм между Севером и Югом.
