The sea port of Ilyichevsk (Lat. 46°20´N; Long. 30°39´E) is situated on the north-west shore of the Black Sea, the right side of the Sukhoy Liman (Estuary), some 25-30 km south-west of the Odessa city.
The port is open for navigation throughout the year. Occasional icing lasts some 30 days on an average in most hard winters and can be managed through ice-breaker assistance.
The Sukhoy Liman (Estuary) in which the port of Ilyichevsk is situated, is open to winds veering from NE to S.
Ilyichevsk is one of the youngest sea ports. The construction of the port planned as one of the Odessa port’s regions commenced in 1957 but berths and warehouses being put into operation, it turned to be a large port unit by itself; its further construction is well on the way.
By 1967 the port’s cargo turnover had exceeded 5 mln. tons. Sixteen berths, with depths up to 11.5 m are specialized to handle certain commodities and provide for handling of various export-import and coastal trade cargoes, such as generals, bulk cargoes (coal, minerals, building materials, chemicals), caoutchouk, liquid cargoes (fats, oils), etc.
